Overview

A sandbar that runs for kilometers at low tide, and the clearest water in the region.

Panampangan is a small island off Sapa-Sapa with a sandbar that, when the tide is out, extends into a strip of white sand running well over 3 kilometers out to sea. It is regularly described as the longest sandbar in the Philippines. Walking out along it, with water on both sides and no land ahead, is the reason people make the journey to Tawi-Tawi.

The water is exceptionally clear and the reef around the island is in good condition by national standards. Bring your own snorkel gear; nothing is rented here.

There is no resort, and only day trips are allowed now.

Things to do

  1. 01Walk the sandbar at low tideThe crescent-shaped sandbar runs out about 3,128 metres into Basibuli Shoal, so check the tide table before you charter the boat.
  2. 02Picnic in the beach huts and grilling areasIn 2018 there were huts and grilling areas on the beach for picnics, with Marines posted on the island; bring your own food, water and shade.
  3. 03Swim and snorkel off the islandThe water is clear and the reef is in good condition, but nothing is rented here, so bring your own snorkel gear.
  4. 04Stop at Simunul on the boat from BongaoThe trip takes 30 minutes to 1 hour by speedboat or pump boat, and tours from Bongao often stop at Simunul for the Sheik Karimul Makhdum Mosque on the way.
  5. 05Find the other 3 sandbarsBesides the long one, the island has 3 more sandbars, 1 at the north-western end and 2 at the south-eastern end.
