Overview

One of the largest mosques in the Philippines, on the edge of the city at Kalanganan.

Four minarets, a gold central dome and a prayer hall built to hold several thousand people, standing in open ground on the western edge of the city. It was funded by the Sultan of Brunei, whose name it carries, and opened in 2011.

The scale is the point and photographs undersell it — the approach across the forecourt is what registers. Inside, the ornament is restrained: geometry and calligraphy, no figures, in the way of the tradition.

It is a working congregational mosque, busiest at Friday midday prayer, and it is used by the city rather than maintained as a monument.

A rehabilitation paid for by the Office of the Chief Minister was handed over on 1 July 2025: waterproofing, repainting, air-conditioning, a new office building and a perimeter fence. The Bangsamoro heritage commission now manages the mosque, which hosts congregational prayers, janazah rites and weddings, and visitors are asked to keep proper decorum inside.

  2. 02See the gold domes and the 43-metre minarets lit at nightThe minarets are 43 metres high and lit after dark, bright enough to guide pilots flying near the city.
  3. 03Watch the sunset from the Baywalk near the mosqueA waterfront walk close to the Grand Mosque is where people in the city go to watch the sun set over the bay.
