Overview

A 314-meter peak above the capital, climbed as a pilgrimage and for the view.

The mountain over Bongao is the province’s landmark and its most important site at once. Near the summit are graves held sacred by local Muslims, and people climb to visit them, to pray and to make vows — so the path carries pilgrims and sightseers on the same steps.

The climb takes roughly an hour to an hour and a half on a stepped and rooted trail through forest. Long-tailed macaques live on the mountain and gather along the route; climbers traditionally bring bananas for them.

The summit gives the whole archipelago — Sanga-Sanga, the reefs, and on a clear day the outer islands running south towards Borneo. It is the single best hour in BARMM.

Things to do

  1. 01Climb the stone steps to the view deck on Tambisan PeakA cobblestone trail of 3,608 steps runs from the jump-off at Barangay Pasiagan to a view deck at 317 metres, looking over the Celebes Sea to Tambisan Island in Sabah; start early, as the heat builds fast.
  2. 02Register at the visitor centre before you climbIn 2017 climbers registered and got a briefing at the visitor centre, and paid an entrance fee of PHP 20 towards upkeep.
  3. 03Bring bananas for the macaques along the trailFriendly monkeys gather beside the path on the way up, so bring enough bananas for them, and keep other food in a closed bag.
  4. 04Visit the tampat shrines near the summit, quietly and dressed modestlyPilgrims climb to pray at the burial shrines under the Tampat rocks, where 2 followers of Sheik Karimul Makhdum are said to be buried.
  5. 05Look out from the peaks named after the islands they faceThe mountain has 6 limestone peaks, and each one looks out towards the island it is named after: Bongao, Simunul, Tambisan, Tinondakan, Pajar and Sibutu, the highest at 342 metres.
  6. 06Tie a ribbon at the pagbaggut spotsThe registration office hands out coloured ribbons to tie near the summit while making a wish; each colour stands for a kind of wish, such as health, peace or success.
